Women of Balochistan: Rewriting the Script of Social Dissent

Editorial

March 8, 2026 is globally recognised as the International Women’s Day. On this day the world honours and pays tribute to all women who have struggled against all kinds of odds and challenges.
In this regard post Word War I, on March 8, 1917 women stood up and protested against the hunger and starvation caused by the war. Because of this protest Bolshevik party dedicated this day to women and after that in 1975 UNO dedicated this day as International Women’s Day. Since then the March 8 has been celebrated across the world to commemorate the unwavering struggle of women. They are fighting a double struggle against the traditional patriarchal norms within their society and the repressive political structures; nevertheless, they have influenced people to struggle against the oppressive systems and to fight for their rights. As the most famous Civil Rights Movement of “Black Lives Matter” was mainly inspired by the defiance act of one of the women, namely Rosa Parks who refused to give up her seat on a bus to white person.

Concurrently, the Baloch women are struggling for their rights not as a woman but as a Baloch nation. They are struggling for their right to self-realisation in both social and political realms. Baloch societal makeup has always recognised the importance and significant part of women in the development of a strengthened society where the transition of Baloch women has been acknowledged. As the evolution of the role of Baloch women is witnessed from the private sphere of women to the forefront of political movements. The Baloch women have challenged the traditional systematic inequality and the orthodox approach for women. They have come to the forefront and are leading the rights movements and social justice movements. They are demanding not individual freedoms but collective responsibility and unity of thought and action. The Baloch women have been subjected to atrocities, yet they still stand like a mountain to resist the injustices. Their actions are neither abstract ideas nor rhetorical wishes but a concrete defiance and determination part of the continuing struggle.

The historical struggle of the women has largely been rooted in their belief that they are equally important in structuring and organising a society. On this day, people in the world do observe the occasion to honour and remember the tireless struggle of women who have fought every battle of challenge and obstacles in the society and have served their nations in their respective fields. Similarly, Baloch women are known and respected for their unwavering dedication and unique contributions to the Baloch society in any way possible. Their contributions in Literature, art and music is never forgotten, as they are giving their outstanding best to serve the art and literature. The cultural part of Baloch women is terrific to see, who —with their talents in embroidery and other creative hand-works — are always serving the Baloch culture. They are appreciated and respected for their selfless works in art and music not only in singing, but through writing poetry, performing musical instruments and other artistic works. This is not a result of fortuitous conduct but rather a long running traditional norm of the Baloch society where it has always treated women as an equal and integral part of the Baloch society. This day reminds us of all those women who have tirelessly stood against the injustices and are resisting and struggling for a better life society with their unwavering commitment and dedication.
