Biography

Anwar Sahib Khan, also remembered with the name “Mama”, was an influential Baloch poet, a realist writer, and a foundational figure in the
realm of Baloch cinema. Originating from the coastal area of Pasni, Mama was an inspirational figure in the socio-political struggle of the Baloch society. Through his literary contributions, cinematic performances, and intellectual mentorship, he reshaped modern literature and the performing arts in the Baloch nation.
 
Anwar Sahib Khan was born in Pasni on 11 April 1944. Unlike others, Mama preferred to live in Pasni for the majority of his life. The coastal areas nurtured his perception of life, because he grew up among the fishermen, coastal laborers, and people which gave him a deep understanding of the challenges in life as a Baloch. Throughout his educational journey, He was evolving with the passion and love of performing arts and literary works which shaped his life in a significant way.
 
After his academic career, Anwar Sahib Khan joined the National Bank of Pakistan (NBP) as a cashier. During his 28-year banking career, he was stationed across various cities of Makuran, including Gwadar, Pasni, Panjgur, and Jiwani. During his professional work, Mama deeply connected with the local Baloch residents, understanding and realizing the hurdles the Baloch society faces daily, the realities of the Baloch nation were significant to Anwar sahib khan’s thoughts and ideas. Mama retired from his occupation after 28 years and indulged himself passionately in the cinematic and literary realm afterwards. Anwar sahib Khan, as a literary figure, was considered an impactful artist, through his verses that vividly described the shores, terrains, and attractions in his literary imagination, meanwhile, his poetry is known to be the visionary lessons of unity, struggle, and progress for the Baloch nation. Mama Anwar had the vision of channelizing his pen as a voice for collective struggle, resistance against injustice, and ideas of progressive unity. In his literary contribution, his two literary works are famously known to be Sareechk and Chaotaar, portraying the beauty of Balochistan through the lens of romanticism and resiliency through poetry.
 
In addition to his literary contributions, Anwar Sahib Khan played a major role in the foundational era of Baloch cinema and Theater. His career in cinema had its early steps during the 1980s, at the age of 39 with various theaters and dramas. Mama’s cinematic style of acting is vast with major roles, ranging from dramatic roles to diverse patterns. His recognition in acting had an impactful influence in cinema, starring in the landmark Balochi Movie Balochistan Hotel, portraying the lives of the Baloch nation in oppressive conditions.
 
Anwar Sahib Khan’s influence as a mentor in the Baloch society played a key role in his inspiring journey, He was known as “Mama” in Baloch society because of his kindness, mentorship for younger literary generations, and a steadfast figure against social injustice in Balochistan. He was famous for his sittings with the local people with various discussions, his lessons and suggestions for the passionate learners of literature earned him great respect and appreciation among youths and his challenges against the suppressive silence and right to progress were his greatest achievements as an individual.
 
Anwar Sahib Khan, in his inspiring life, passed away on 3 august, 2018, at the age of 74. His legacy remains as a profound figure who contributed to literature, cinema, and mentorship as a Baloch elder, Through his pen, the artistic portrayal of the Baloch landscape and the realities of Balochistan are the elements of Anwar Sahib Khan’s legacy of art, vision, and struggle.
