Baloch Students Action Committee (BSAC) Quetta (Shaal) Zone organized a one-day book stall at Faiz Muhammad Road, Quetta as part of the Balochistan Kitaab Karwan. A region which suffers from systemic educational crisis and corruption by the government, the members of BSAC organized a book stall under the banner of Balochistan Kitab Karwan, a widely recognized campaign which aims to provide access to education and literature across the region.
The event aimed to promote literacy, education and intellectual engagement among students and the general public. Members of BSAC actively participated in the management of the stall, offering the public a large selection of books ranging from Balochi and Brahui literature, history, politics, world literature, science, philosophy and others. The campaign attracted the interests of people at large, including students, teachers, journalists, and local public. The event was not just about selling books but a conscious political program to contribute into the intellectual growth of Balochistan’s youth.
Teachers praised the event and called it a positive move which will be able to ensure a huge change and betterment to the society. While, the students were also seen optimistic and said that they don’t have libraries and access to these books in their cities. Many had never laid eyes a real book until their arrival in Quetta.
The event was aimed to promote literacy, re-education, and empowerment.
Undoubtedly, the Balochistan’s literacy rate has reached below 45% in recent years, and remains the lowest in Pakistan. Rural areas in particular face a shortage of teachers, school closures and a lack of basic facilities. In this respect, the organising of a public book-stall plays an important role.
By bringing books to the streets, BSAC is committed not only to promote literacy, however also to declaring the right of every Baloch citizen to critical thinking, cultural preservation, and intellectual growth. By Bringing the books to the people not just for reading but encouraging them to reclaim their right to think, to question, to find the true knowledge, to imagine, and to participate practically in the building of our nation.
The Balochistan Kitab Karwan campaign, of which this event was a part, aims to address the educational crisis created by years of marginalization. Public book stalls offer an easy access to books, sowing the seeds of an educated and enlightened society.
